Instructor BiographiesEI Education Division Instructors | Pete Bailey Biography | Prior to retirement Peter was Staff Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Process Development Manufacturing and Quality Technology Department General Electric Aircraft Engines, the last 12 years concentrating on shot peening. Mr. Bailey joined General Electric in July 1972. Prior to that time he was involved in the development of dispersion-strengthened mill products with E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co., and then Fansteel, Inc. Prior to his DuPont and Fansteel experience, Mr. Bailey worked for the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation, primarily in the application of industrial gases to steel making. Degrees: BS Mechanical Engineering, Cornell University 1956, and MS Metallurgy, Stevens Institute of Technology 1961. | | Dave Barkley Biography | In 2009, Mr. Barkley became the Director of Electronics Incorporated’s Education Division. Electronics Inc. (EI) has been providing training for the shot peening and blast cleaning industry since 1991. Mr. Barkley received a degree in engineering from Purdue University’s School of Technology where he later taught as an adjunct professor in the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering departments.. Mr. Barkley began working for Electronics Inc. in 1987 where his duties included product documentation and regional training. He left El to work as an Electrical Control Engineer for an associate company, but returned in 2003 to serve the engineering department as a Product Engineer and as the Engineering Manager. Mr. Barkley currently oversees all aspects of the workshops and on-site training sessions while continuing to conduct classes in fundamental and specialized peening processes. | | John Cammett Biography | John Cammett, PhD, PE, retired as Metals and Ceramics Branch Chief after sixteen years empoyment in the Materials Engineering Division at the U.S. Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point, NC. Dr. Cammett’s technical responsibilities included the analysis of aircraft component failures, development of repair/rework process methods and engineering support of depot manufacturing operations. Dr. Cammett is now a Nadcap auditor in shotpeening and conventional machining. He was owner of Cam-Met, Inc., a consulting firm that specialized in resolving metal and metal process problems. Prior to his tenure with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Cammett was employed for 20 years with Metcut Research Associates and worked in fatigue, fracture mechanics, residual stress measurement, metallurgical research and failure analysis. He also worked five years at General Electric specializing in fatigue, low cycle fatigue and fracture mechanics properties of aircraft engine materials. In addition, Dr. Cammett consults for Electronics Incorporated (EI) on shot peening processes, writes articles for EI's magazine, The Shot Peener, and conducts workshop and on-site training classes for Electronics Inc. Education Division. Dr. Cammett has also worked with Lambda Research, Inc. on research and development of low plasticity burnishing. Dr. Cammett received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from Ohio State University and his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. A Registered Professional Engineer, he is a fellow of ASTM, past Chairman of Committee E-9 on Fatigue, past Chairman and life member of ASM International, and a member of the International Scientific Committee for Shot Peening. In recognition for his contributions to the advancement of shot peening, Dr. Cammett was honored as Shot Peener of the Year in 2006 at the 16th annual Shot Peening and Blast Cleaning Workshop. Dr. Cammett's Electronics Inc. workshop and on-site training classes are among the most popular and highly-rated training sessions in the Electronics Inc. Education Division program due to his expansive technical knowledge of shot peening and his practical experience. Students appreciate Dr. Cammett's ability to address their questions and appreciate his accounts of real-life applications of the shot peening process. | | Jack Champaigne Biography | Jack Champaigne is President of Electronics Incorporated (EI). EI a manufacturer of products that improve the quality and control of shot peening and blast cleaning processes including flow controls, monitors, MagnaValves for air and wheel blast machines, Almen gages and certified Almen test strips. Mr. Champaigne developed the MagnaValve, a magnetic media valve, and Electronics Inc. has 14 patents relating to shot peening control technology. In addition to marketing products used worldwide in the surface finishing industry, Mr. Champaigne is committed to education and the distribution of information. Electronics Inc. hosted the first Shot Peening and Blast Cleaning workshop in 1991 and continues to sponsor innovative workshops in North and South America, Asia, and Europe. EI provides on-site shot peening and testing programs and was the first shot peening training company to receive FAA recognition. Since 1986, EI has published The Shot Peener. Read in 85 countries, the magazine is dedicated to sharing information and expanding markets for shot peening and blast cleaning industries. In 1995, EI launched an extensive online library devoted to shot peening and blast cleaning and is now the largest single source for research papers and articles. Mr. Champaigne has contributed to the advancement of shot peening throughout his career by volunteering his time to the International Scientific Committee for Shot Peening, the Surface Enhancement Division of Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the Aerospace Metals Engineering Committee (AMEC) of the Aerospace Materials Division of SAE. Mr. Champaigne has been appointed Chairman of the International Scientific Committee for Shot Peening and host of the Eleventh International Conference on Shot Peening in 2011. In 1996, he was Chairman of the Sixth International Conference on Shot Peening which was held in San Francisco, California. He currently holds the position of Committee Chairman of the Surface Enhancement Division of SAE. In January 2008, Mr. Champaigne founded a new shot peening sub-committee of AMEC and, as Chairman, is presiding over a group of international industry leaders in the pursuit of updating and creating specifications that will be relevant to today's shot peening industries. Mr. Champaigne graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree in 1968 and has worked in the shot peening industry since the inception of Electronics Incorporated in 1974. | | Sylvain Forgues Biography | Shockform Inc. - President of Shockform Inc., Montreal, Quebec. Sylvain obtained his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ottawa in 1990 followed by a Master`s degree in Applied Mechanics from the ?cole Polytechnique de Montr?al. In his Master`s degree, he studied the beneficial effects of hole cold expansion through 3D non-linear finite element analysis, residual stress measurement by x-ray diffraction and experimental fatigue testing. He started his career at Bombardier Aerospace in Research and Development and working on the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) of the CF-18. After 5 years, he transferred to the commercial side where he was in charge of structural in-service issues for the fuselage of the CRJ-200 fleet. In 2002, he became Section Chief of the R&D, Robotics and Software department at L-3 MAS where his team developed and marketed an on-aircraft robotic shot peening system used on the CF-18 and on the CRJ-700. During his 20 years working on fatigue life improvement techniques, Sylvain has published several papers and has presented his work at numerous conferences. In 2006, Sylvain started his own company, Shockform Incorporated, which specializes in shot peening. Shockform offers a full range of equipment from the small FlapSpeed? flapper peening controller to large wheel and air blast machines as well as ultrasonic activated shot peening machines. Shockform also offers UV and standard light inspection camera, as well as EI consumables and training. | | Dr. Miao Hongyan Biography | Dr. Miao Hongyan is in a postdoctoral program at Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, Canada. Her research topic is on the optimization of the shot peening and peen forming process using experimental, analytical and numerical methods. The research project is in cooperation with several aerospace industries and universities in Montreal and is the systematic study of the relationships between the peening parameters, peening control parameters (Almen intensity and surface coverage)and peening results (residual stress profiles and surface roughness, etc.) as well as the improvement of fatigue life of peened components. Dr. Miao Hongyan received her Ph.D. degree from Ecole Polytechnique in 2010 from the department of Applied Mechanics. Her Ph.D. thesis is "Theoretical and Numerical Simulation of Shot Peening and Stress Peen Forming Process." She has developed a new 3D random FE model with the ability to relate most of the shot peening parameters. A three-step Implicit-Explicit-Implicit model was established with the ability to predict the influence of the pre-bending conditions on the resulting forming results in the case of stress peen forming. Dr. Miao Hongyan received her bachelor and master degrees from Beijing University of Chemical Technology in Mechanical Engineering. She has more than 13 years experience working with Finite Element simulation. She is familiar with most of the FE software such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, NATRAN, and ABAQUE. She has published over 20 journal and conference articles during her research work. | | Kumar Balan Biography | Wheelabrator - Kumar is employed by the Wheelabrator, Burlington, Ontario in Applications, Sales and Marketing. Kumar has a Master of Business Administration degree from York University, Toronto and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, from India. Kumar’s initial employment with Wheelabrator Corporation was in 1990 in Bombay, India, where he worked as a Design and Applications Engineer. Kumar directed a team of six engineers at the Wheelabrator Corp. for ‘concept to commissioning’ of Asia’s first automated Rail Car Shot Blasting Plant for the Indian Railways. Kumar has also been employed by the Pangborn Corporation, India as an Applications Manager also responsible for technology transfer. During 1995-2000, Kumar worked for Blastworks Inc., a Canadian company that specialized in Automated Airblast Machinery. After a detour in Industrial Automation relating to robotic material Handling systems and CNC Fabrication machinery, in July of 2004 Kumar returned to the Wheelabrator Group in Burlington, Ontario where he now handles Applications, Sales and Marketing of Automated Airblast equipment to the North American market. Kumar was awarded The Shot Peener of the Year Award at the 16th annual Shot Peening and Blast Cleaning Workshop in 2006. | | Michele Bandini Biography | Peen Service - Michele Bandini was born in Ravenna, Italy in 1962. He is the General Manager of Peen Service in Bologna, Italy, and he has been involving in Shot Peening since receiving his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1990. Michele has been involved in several studies regarding either shot blasting or shot peening surface treatments and in particular the shot peening application and benefits as R&D engineer of Norblast. He has been co-author of several thesis and technical papers concerning Shot Peening Process, Benefits and Application. Michele teaches at the Mechanical Engineering University of Bologna, Trento and Milan in Italy. He is in charge of the shot peening technology transfer in the company Ipar Blast, an associate company of Peen Service in Spain. He is also a specialist of residual stress measurements with the X-Ray Diffraction Technique and offers his knowledge and experience to the design department of Peen Service’s customers and cooperates with them to solve their problems by shot peening. Michele's latest achievement is receiving the 2009 Shot Peener of the year award from The Shot Peener Magazine. | | Bill Barker Biography | Progressive Surface Inc. - Bill received his BS degree in Physics in 1983. He then served seven years in the US Navy as an instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power School as well as a Submarine Qualified Officer aboard the nuclear submarine USS George C. Marshall (SSBN 654). He has worked in technical sales and application engineering at Progressive Surface Inc., Grand Rapids, since 1991, focused on the processes of shot peening, grit blasting, thermal spray coating and high pressure waterjet stripping. As Sales Engineer, Bill has responsibility for serving Progressive's customers in the aerospace OEM and MRO industries. | | Dave Breuer Biography | Metal Imrovement Company (MIC) - David Breuer started off as the divisional sales manager for the Milwaukee shot peening division in 1997. From 1999-2004 David worked in a Regional Sales Manager role where he was responsible for the sales at seven Metal Improvement Company shot peening facilities. From 2004-2007 David worked with MIC’s Laser Peening group promoting the process to all industries. From 2007 to present David has been working as a corporate technical specialist while also supporting the Milwaukee division’s sales needs. In 2002 David completed “Shot Peening Applications – Eighth Edition” which is the most widely read book in the world on shot peening. In addition, David has authored and presented several papers on different subject matters related to shot peening. They have appeared in various technical publications and at various technical conferences. In 2007, David was the primary contributor to the American Gear Manufacturers Association’s (AGMA) document “AGMA 938-A05 Shot Peening of Gears”. Prior to Metal Improvement Company, David worked as a consultant in the power industry performing Finite Element Analysis on steam turbines. David graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1992 from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. | | Pete Bortnichak | Wheelabrator | | Michael Brauss Biography | Proto Manufacturing - Michael Brauss has over 25 years experience in the research, design, development and application development of XRD systems. With over thirty publications and multiple patents, his inventions and developments include: automated residual stress mapping; iXRD portable stress analysis system, (world’s smallest and fastest system); iXRD combo systems; and LXRD laboratory stress system and gantry robot systems. Mr. Brauss also pioneered practical field usage of XRD stress analysis, in-line production applications and fully automated applications. Mr. Brauss is the president of Proto Manufacturing, and also currently serves on the ASTM E28.13 residual stress subcommittee. | | Bryan Chevrie | Electronics Inc. | | Steve Claffey | Langtry Blast Technologies | | Jeff Derda Biography | Electronics Inc. - Jeff is the Operations Manager at Electronics Inc. He is a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jeff has been involved with both the plastics and bearings industries. He has over 18 years experience in metal working and metal processing along with a background in metallurgy and metal treating. He was previously employed as Engineering Manager for divisions of Torrington Bearings, SKF Bearings, and RBC. | | Dan Dickey Biography | Innovative Peening Systems (IPS) - In 1983 Dan graduated from Southwest Missouri State University Graduate School of Business. He was introduced to shot peening in 1983. Dan has developed and managed Innovative Peening Systems, a shot peen equipment manufacturing facility, from 1993 to 2000. In 2000 Dan purchased Innovative Peening Systems from his employer. Using a blasting method, Dan and Innovative Peening Systems developed a coating removal system for NASA on flight hardware and The Space Shuttle solid rocket booster nozzles. In 2003 Innovative Peening Systems opened a shot peening job shop in Atlanta GA. | | Dan Diverty Biography | Wheelabrator - Dan joined Wheelabrator Canada in 1974 as a member of the engineering group, later he became supervisor of the drawing office between the years 1975 to 1978. He joined the Wheelabrator Canada sales team in 1978 as a Territory Representative. Dan graduated through the sales force as the Product Manager of Wheel Blast Cleaning and Peening areas of the Wheelabrator Business. In 1999 through the reorganization of the BCP Wheelabrator Group, Dan was assigned the duties of Peening Manager for North America. | | Bob Gillespie Biography | Premier Shot Company - Founder and President of Premier Shot Company, Bob graduated in 1966 from Cleveland State University. Majoring in Metallurgy, he has over thirty years experience directly involved in the field of shot peening and blasting media. He spent seventeen years at Metal Improvement Company, serving as Manager of Technical Services and Division Manager of their Cincinnati Division and later as Director of Research and Development for the corporate office in Paramus, NJ. In 1988 he founded Premier Shot Company and has been involved in all aspects of shot peening from processing of parts to design and development of computer controlled shot peening equipment. Premier Shot Company manufactures high quality conditioned cut wire media for use in critical shot peening processes and also provides services such as complete shot evaluation and introduction of new technology items which involve Image Analysis for automatic inspection of shot peening media. | | Jeff Girman Biography | Saint-Gobain Zirpro - Sales Manager for Saint-Gobain Zirpro in North America for the past 7 years. Jeff has been affiliated with Zirpro for the last 14 years. Jeff received a B.A. from Indiana University-Bloomington in 1989. Since 1990, Jeff has worked in the surface treatment industry with experience in mass finishing, parts washing, abrasive blasting and shot peening. Ken has been involved in the shot peening industry from the equipment side for 28 years. Ken has contributed many articles and papers that have been used in the Shot Peener Workshop Manual and has attended the Workshops since the beginning in 1990. Ken has held positions over the years with Wheelabrator Corporation, Blast Cleaning Products (BCP), Blastworks Inc., US Filter and Progressive Surface. His experience is unique in that it has covered both centrifugal wheel peening and compressed air nozzle peening. Ken's present focus is on airframe and land based turbine shot peening applications. | | Mark Ingram Biography | Electronics Inc. - In 1983 Mark received and Electronics Degree at ITT Technical Institute. Upon graduation Mark went to Crown International as a line technician later moving to an engineering department. In 1987 Mark joined Eneractive Group to design DC to AC converters for the RV Industry along with many other electronic devices for the industry. In 1990 Mark joined Electronics Incorporated and began doing test and repair work in house and in the field. Lutsko Biography | Lutsko Industrial Sales - Technical Sales, Lutsko Industrial Sales, LLC. Pangborn's representative in Michigan and Western Ontario. Started in the metal finishing business in 1975, with vibratory finishing, air blasting machines, jobbing work for any customer who needed finishing of their manufactured parts. Represented and had his own company and once again has his own company. 30 plus years of experience in Mass finishing and Blasting. Shot Peening Seminar instructor since the beginning of the Electronics Incorporated Peening Workshops. | | Mat Loutzenheiser Biography | Wheelabrator - Matt is the R & D Manager for Wheelabrator Group N.A. Matt worked as a Mechanical Engineer designing new equipment for Wheelabrator for 5 years prior to his current position. Matt is largely responsible for the development of Wheelabrator’s EZEFIT line of wheels. Matt holds a BSME from McNeese State in Louisiana. | | Joe McGreal Biography | Ervin Industries - Joe graduated from St. Ambrose University in 1987 with a BA in Business Administration and Marketing. The past 16 years have been dedicated to abrasive blast cleaning, shot peening and factory automation. Joe has extensive experience in both compressed air and rotary wheel blast cleaning and peening systems. He has experience involving all blasting granules with a primary emphasis on carbon steel and stainless steel blasting media. In 1999 he joined Ervin Industries, Ann Arbor, MI., as a Technical Sales Representative in the Midwest region. Joe has since been promoted to Midwest Regional Sales Manager. | | Daryll McKinley Biography | Mr. McKinley is currently employed as a design engineer in the aerospace industry and also serves as a consultant engineer. His engineering experience includes mechanical design, test and evaluation, metallurgical failure analysis, materials processing, and aerospace and automotive accident investigations. Approximately 15 years ago, he developed a shotpeen artisan training program for the Naval Aviation Depot in Pensacola, Florida. Other U.S. Navy maintenance depots as well as commercial activities adopted this training program. Mr. McKinley was a committee member of the International Conference on Shot Peening 6 held in San Francisco, California. He serves as a consultant to Electronics, Inc. and participates in their workshops. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and received his BS in Mechanical Engineering and MS in Materials Engineering from Auburn University. | | Mark Nicholson Biography | Potters Industries - Mark graduated from Bethany College in 1973 with BA degree then he graduated from University of Dayton in 1977 with a Masters degree in Administration and Management. Prior to Potters Industries, Mark spent 3 years with Vestal Laboratories marketing laboratory and surgical components to Hospitals. Mark has been with Potters 26 years covering most of the Midwest with sales and marketing of glass beads for shot peening and metal surface treatments. Mark also helped to develop and patent a centrifugal process to deliver glass beads without using compressed air. | | Holger Polanetzki | MTU Aero Engines - Holger graduated from the Technical University of Berlin in 1986 with an engineering degree in metallurgy. He began working at MTU Aero Engines GmbH in the same year in the department for chemical/electrochemical processes. After a couple of years he transferred to the Thermal spray coating group. In 2001 he started his work in surface enhancement processes. Now he is the responsible process engineer of surface enhancement processes at MTU. The tasks consist of everyday business and technology development of surface enhancement methods. Furthermore he is the GE certifying agent for shot peening, dry blast and wet blast at MTU. Holger was awarded the Shot Peener of the Year Award at the 18th annual Shot Peening and Blast Cleaning Workshop in 2008. He is a member of the DGM working group Mechanical Surface treatments (Germany), member of the shot peening sub-committee of AMEC SE, alternate user voting member of the NADCAP Nonconventional Machining and Surface Enhancement task group. | | Terry Reckart Biography | OSB Sales and Consulting - From 1973 through 1979 he did a stint in the United States Navy aboard nuclear powered fleet ballistic submarines. Following the Navy he spent 14 years as a nuclear power plant “Startup Engineer”. In 1995 he went to work for W.S. Tyler in Mentor, Ohio as the Quality Control Manager and in short time, became involved in a new photo optical particle analysis technology. In 1998 Terry became Product Manager for the Computerized Particle Analyzer (CPA). In 2005 Terry left W.S. Tyler and started his own company OSB Sales and Consulting. | | Bob Schoen | Wheelabrator | | Michael A. Sorenson Biography | Boeing - Project Manager - Boeing Commercial Airplane Group (BCAG). A native of Billings, MT, Michael is employed by the Boeing Company in the Puget Sound region. His first (6) years were spent at the Auburn Fabrication Division as a Manufacturing Engineer. From 1992-2004, he worked as a process engineer in the Machined Products manufacturing business unit, with primary areas of responsibility of supporting the shot peen, processing and assembly areas. He led efforts in lean improvements, coordinating new shot peen work, purchasing new shot peen machines and training. In early 2004, Michael accepted a position in Renton as a Project Manager in the Core Production Engineering group, leading efforts within BCAG for simplified process specifications. He also serves as the BCAG Manufacturing Subject Matter Expert for the shot peen process. Michael resides in Federal Way, WA, with his family. Degrees: B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Minor in Industrial & Management Engineering from Montana State University, 1986. | | Dan Spinner Biography | Superior Shot Peening - After completing his education in chemistry at The University of Cincinnati in 1968, Dan worked as a chemist in chemical metallurgy for GE Jet Engine in Evendale, Ohio. He was recruited by Wheelabrator in late 1972, and began his career in surface prep and treatment where he was very active working with the automotive industry in shot peening. Over the years he has held positions with major surface preparation companies and suppliers to the foundry industry where he increased his knowledge of metal treatments. In 2002 he joined Applied Ultrasonics to promote a new ultrasonic impact technology (UIT) that improves fatigue life significantly over peening. In 2007, Dan joined forces with Superior Shot Peening to assist in the base business of metal treatments for fatigue, corrosion, and stress corrosion abatement, and to add UIT to the line of treatments that Superior provides. | | Herb Tobben Biography | Clemco Industries - Technician and Sample Processing Lab Manager; Technical Services Group, Marketing Department, Clemco Industries Corp., Washington, Missouri. Herb has managed the company’s Sample Processing operations in support of its ZERO engineered manual and automated cabinet product line for more than 30 years. He joined ZERO in 1970 and, over the course of his career, has held a number of managerial positions in production, research & development, and technical areas. Currently, among his other duties, Herb manages the Sample Processing Laboratory, working to develop surface finishing, shot peening, and surface preparation solutions for the company’s domestic and international customers. Herb conducts training, contributes to industry publications, and is known in the industry for his broad experience and technical expertise. | | Jim Whalen Biography | Progressive Surface Inc. - Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Progressive Surface. Jim has been involved with the shot peening process since 1987. Upon receiving his BSME he joined General Electric and held several positions in both the Corporate Manufacturing Management Program and the Manufacturing Technology laboratory (MTL) within GE Aircraft Engines. He gained shot peening expertise by developing new peening processes, tooling analytical analysis and inspection tools, and equipment to peen critical aircraft engine components. Jim was instrumental in introducing NC peening to GE’s production division by specifying and installing new equipment, NC peening methods and operator training. During these assignments Jim also received a MSME from the University of Cincinnati. Jim has also had the distinguished honor of being part of their team named the 1993 “Shot Peener of the Year”. In 1994, Jim left GE to join Progressive Surface in 1993 as Manager of Process Engineering. In this position, Jim developed and enhanced Progressive’s process experience to aid in the design and build of industry leading peening, blasting, and water jet machine tools. | | Holly Williams Biography | Electronics Inc. - Holly formerly worked for Power Components as a production supervisor and later joined Specialty Heat Treating as a Quality Control agent. In 2000 Holly joined Electronics Incorporated with her primary responsibilities being Certification and Quality Control of EI products; however Holly also oversees production and calibration of EI’s Almen Products and MagnaValves. | | Kevin Young | Progressive Surface - Process/Product Development Manager. Upon completion of his BSME, Kevin joined Progressive Surface in 1995, as a design engineer. He then moved into the Process Development Department where he manages all process and product development as well as manage the Contract Services for Progressive.
