The Shot Peening Technologist Certification Program conducted on the customer's premises includes two days of classroom instruction and shop practice. Certificates of Proficiency are awarded to those demonstrating shop practice competence and passing a written examination. The fee is $1,000 per student (minimum of 5 students) plus transportation/lodging costs for two instructors. Each student receives a binder containing specifications, reference information and classroom notes. The instructors will specifically review your organization's ability to meet any particular procedure or specification with special emphasis on equipment capability. This program is ideally suited for companies supporting ISO 9000 and other training requirements. The following topics are covered in the presentation:

  • Definition of shot peening
  • Benefits of Peening
  • Origins of Peening
  • What Peening does
  • How Peening works
  • How part life is increased
  • Definition of stress, including distinction between tension and compression.
  • Definition and explanation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) failure.
  • How peening increases resistance to fatigue and corrosion failures.
  • Dimple geometry.
  • Compression zone beyond dimple size
  • Peening Intensity and Almen strips
  • Peening intensity proportional to sine of impingement angle
  • Measuring intensity - generation and interpretation of saturation curves, with examples.
  • Intensity expressions and ranges. Intensity verification.
  • Almen strip precautions
  • Peening parameters: things that affect peening intensity.
  • Peening Coverage
  • Coverage: Partial vs. full coverage; coverage inspection.
  • Surface finish
  • Barber-pole coverage problems
  • Specifications and standard practices
  • Shot peen variables; shot size, shot velocity, air pressure, etc
  • Shot delivery methods
  • Hole (internal) peening methods
  • Corner peening damage
  • Drawing note precautions
  • Masking precautions
  • Air management and quality issues
  • Discussion of plating and other processes requiring prior peening.
  • Part shape effects
  • Conventional and unconventional peening methods.
  • Media types and media specification, maintenance and analysis
  • Shot size and surface effects
  • Audit preparation and benefits

Coursework is in Microsoft Powerpoint format and can be run from a computer, or can be presented via overhead transparencies. The course is provided by Electronics Incorporated, publisher of "The Shot Peener."

Additional consulting services are available from Electronics Inc. including equipment and process audits and recommendations for quality improvements. Standard day rate is $1,000 with a minimum of half day increments plus travel/lodging. Projects requiring more extensive support can also be accommodated.
